Zelensky’s Optimism on NATO Membership Grows Following Summit amidst Russia-Ukraine Conflict

[ad_1]

[In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proclaimed that the recent NATO summit has laid to rest any doubts about Ukraine’s future membership in the alliance. Despite the absence of a concrete timeline, which Zelensky had previously described as unprecedented and absurd, he stated that Kyiv received commitments for long-term military support in order to defend Ukraine and deter Russian aggression.

During the summit, President Biden tactfully navigated the divide between those advocating for a swift Ukrainian accession into NATO and those who expressed concerns about the potential ramifications of such a hasty move, fearing it could spark a global conflict. Following a productive face-to-face meeting with Zelensky, Biden expressed satisfaction, claiming that all their objectives had been achieved.

Biden has now traveled to Finland, NATO’s newest member state, to engage in a summit with Nordic leaders. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine continues to have far-reaching implications both regionally and globally.

Our correspondents have analyzed Zelensky’s approach to diplomacy and noted a recurring pattern. On the first day of the NATO summit, Ukrainian representatives expressed disappointment and discontent. However, by the second day, there was appeasement from Western counterparts. Ultimately, Zelensky welcomed the West’s assurances of increased military aid and the likelihood of Ukraine’s eventual admission into NATO once the conflict subsides.

According to Jeremy Shapiro, director of research at the European Council on Foreign Relations, Zelensky has adopted a guilt-based strategy in his diplomatic efforts. He has resorted to emphasizing the lack of communication and support from the West and the U.S., using phrases like “You never write, you never call, you never send F-16s” to advocate for his desired outcomes.
