General Valery Zaluzhny Advocates for More Weapons in Ukraine

KYIV, Ukraine — In order for Ukraine’s counteroffensive to gain momentum, Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, the commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, is demanding greater access to weapons and resources. He has been vocal about this need, speaking with his American counterpart Gen. Mark A. Milley and others about the urgency of the situation. Despite promises of support, Ukraine has not yet received the modern fighter jets it requires to effectively combat Russian occupation forces.

Zaluzhny also expressed frustration over the insufficient amount of artillery shells available to his troops, resulting in their being outgunned by the enemy. He emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating that every meter gained by his soldiers comes at the cost of bloodshed.

In his efforts to secure the necessary resources, Zaluzhny maintains regular communication with Milley, outlining the potential consequences of delayed action. He acknowledges Milley’s understanding and support, but recognizes that decisions about resource allocation are made at higher levels of authority.

Zaluzhny highlighted the importance of air superiority in offensive operations, aligning with NATO doctrine. He raised concerns about the outdated aircraft in Ukraine’s arsenal and the need for more modern planes to effectively counter the Russian forces.

While Zaluzhny awaits the arrival of promised F-16s, he also underscored the urgent need for ammunition to sustain the ongoing conflict. Ukraine’s ammunition expenditure is currently exceeding production rates, making it increasingly difficult to continue operations without further support.

Zaluzhny remains steadfast in his determination to protect Ukraine and minimize the consequences of the ongoing conflict. His focus is on preparing for potential worst-case scenarios, including the possibility of nuclear threats from Russia.
