Supreme Court’s Recent Rulings Leave Left Feeling Alienated, Yet Far from Unpopular


[Polls indicate that the recent decisions by the Supreme Court on affirmative action, gay weddings, and student loan debt forgiveness are not as unpopular with the American public as the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Democrats have tried to link these decisions to last year’s loss of abortion rights, but the public opinion is not clearly against them. In fact, some of these decisions have popular support, with Americans being evenly split or even siding with the court in some polls. The decisions include: 1) Allowing business owners to deny services if it conflicts with their LGBTQ+ beliefs, 2) The Biden administration’s inability to forgive student loan debt, and 3) Restrictions on using affirmative action in college admissions. These decisions have garnered support from the American public, as shown in various polls. However, public opinion on these decisions may vary depending on how the question is asked. Overall, while these decisions may motivate Democrats’ base, they are not generating the same level of backlash as the Roe v. Wade decision.
